In the UK, 2012 was the second wettest year since records began. Followed by the coldest spring ever recorded and then a scorching July, the recent ‘bipolar’ weather has had a huge impact on the normal farming routine across the UK. The typical annual patterns of gastrointestinal nematode infection risk may also be altered this year, requiring a different strategic approach to control. While the most appropriate control plan will vary from farm to farm, vets can be reassured that Chanelle Veterinary has a large range of anthelmintic solutions to suit most situations.
Typically, the infective larval stages of gastrointestinal roundworms are at their highest levels on pasture during July and August, with warm and wet weather providing the optimal conditions for larval emergence. The prolonged cold spring of this year may have supressed normal larval emergence and the recent extended period of dry weather could delay the pasture larval peak further. A ticking time bomb, any wet weather will encourage mass emergence, exposing grazing animals to high numbers of infective larvae and massively increasing their risk of developing parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) and its associated production losses.
Farmers should be encouraged to replace reliance on the ‘usual routine’ anthelmintic dose timing with regular faecal egg counts (FEC) to determine herd/flock infection level. These FECs can then be used to allow targeted treatment with the most appropriate anthelmintic in conjunction with best practice management control strategies, such as those detailed by SCOPs. With a wide range of trusted large animal anthelmintic products, vets can be certain of being able to find a solution from Chanelle at a competitive price. A choice of single drug or combination anthelmintic products, available in drench, injectable and pour-on preparations mean that regardless of species, preferred administration technique and previous farm history – including anthelmintic resistance problems – Chanelle can provide an option.
