Extra Order for Vaccine

DEFRA has placed an additional order for 13 million doses of bluetongue stereotype vaccine. Environment secretary Hilary Benn claimed the supply from Merial – alongside an existing contract with Intervet – would allow the government to build on the success of the current vaccination roll out and ensure “sustained momentum” throughout summer. 8 million of the does will be used in England and 5 million in Wales.
The Merial vaccine will be available in 100ml bottles and is expected to require one 1ml does in sheep and two 1ml doses in cattle, given four weeks apart. The company expects to deliver the vaccine in regular batches throughout the summer.
In a related update, new legislation requires animals entering Scotland from a bluetongue restricted zone to be accompanied by a veterinary certificate to prove vaccination. The rule applies to direct moves as well as indirect moves via surveillance zones or bluetongue free areas. The requirement to notify the Scottish government about moves from a restricted zone into Scotland has been extended to include indirect moves via areas free from bluetongue. The laws will also allow a compulsory vaccination compaign to take place this year.
