A horse called Elvis that couldn’t help falling in the mud found a good luck charm in Will Allman and Becky Piper.
The veterinarians, from Wensleydale-based Yoredale Vets, sedated and calmed the 25-year-old Irish bay draught that was all shook up after becoming bogged up to its barrel in a field at Jervalux, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.
Fire and rescue crews from Malton, Masham and Leyburn were called in to form a human tug o’ war and pull the animal free, but found it was stuck in like glue by the suction of the bog.
After two-and-a-half hours, rescuers decided it was time for a little conversation and called in the farmer’s tractor. After attaching a harness it was now or never and the animal was slowly pulled free without injury. Elvis has left the bog and is recovering well.
