ZSL London Zoo has welcomed the birth of a Sulawesi crested macaque – an important addition to the critically endangered species.
The infant, which is yet to be named, was born to 17-year-old Winoo after a 174 day gestation period. It is being nursed by its mother and will be for at least another six months, before gradually changing to a diet of fruit, leaves and insects.
Fathered by dominant male Gaston, the infant is the latest addition to the eight strong troop of Sulawesi crested macaques at ZSL London Zoo. This birth is important to the European breeding programme for endangered species, as Sulawesi crested macaques are under constant threat in the wild from habitat loss and poaching.
