Vets design world first hand-painted shell for injured tortoise

Four vets, a dental surgeon and a 3D designer have scored a world first by fitting a fire-injured tortoise with a hand-painted shell made on a desktop 3D printer. The Brazilian team used measurements and photographs of healthy tortoises to construct a four piece prosthetic.

Freddy, named after the fire-damaged film character Freddy Krueger, has returned to full mobility after a fire destroyed 85 per cent of its natural shell.
