One of the world’s rarest spiders brought into captivity at Bristol Zoo

One of the world’s rarest spiders has been brought into captivity at Bristol Zoo Gardens for the first time, in an attempt to save it from extinction. The Desertas Wolf Spider  is only found on the Desertas Island, near Madeira, Portugal.

The species us under threat from habitat loss due to invasive grass binding the soil where it burrows, blocking its natural shelters. Bristol Zoo has joined forces with Madeira Natural Park and the International Union for conservation of Nature to develop a conservation strategy to protect the species.
